For the Little Sailor

Pieni, ihana kummipoika onkin jo iso poika, 3 vuotta. Ja tomerampi päivä päivältä. Kun tein tätä pikkuista reppua hänelle lahjaksi, en saanut sitä kuvaa mielestäni: Niilo vetäisee repun selkään ja lähtee merille. Heippa!



Ei kai sentään. Reppuun mahtuu vain olennaisin, ehkäpä rakas Rotta kavereineen? Toivottavasti Niilo tykkää siitä. Minä ainakin tykkään. Ja olen jotenkin avuttoman onnellinen siitä, että osasin tehdä säädettävät olkaimet.



My little, dear, sweet godson is already quite big, three years old. And he's more lively every day. When I made this little rucksack for his birthday, I just couldn't get the image out of my head: Niilo puts on his backpack and shouts: "Bye, everyone! I'm off to the sea!"

Not really. The bag is not big enough for sailing trips, it might only have room for the dear Rat. I hope he likes it. I know I do! Though something tells me I shouldn't be this happy for being able to figure out adjustable straps.

The Premier Roses

Ensi-iltaruusut ovat jo melkein kaikki kuihtuneet, mutta show jatkuu. Olen pakahtua ylpeydestä, kun katselen sitä menoa. Tervetuloa esityksiin!



The roses have almost all faded, but the show goes on. Our theater group is playing The Emigrants by Slawomir Mrozek. I'm so immensely proud of our guys!

Cable love

Palmikkoneuletta on sitten kiva tehdä! Ja se on ihanan näköisiäkin. Miksiköhän on tullut niin vähän tehdyksi? Jokon Lina on aivan erityisen ihastuttava ohje. Siitä tuli siskon nimpparilahja. Ja toinen on jo puikoilla.



Cables are lovely and fun to make. I wonder why I knit so little of them? Joko's Lina is especially nice. I gave this first one for my sister. Another one is already half-way through.

Austrian socks oli matkaneuleenani Italiassa, mutta neulemojo ei tullut mukaan sinne. Aloitin sukan vasta paluumatkalla. Sitä on ollut mukava neuloa, koska palmikoissa on minulle juuri sopivasti haastetta, mutta joistain selviä heikkouksiakin on ollut nähtävissä. Suurin on ehkä se, että tämä ihana lanka olisi ehkä ollut enemmän edukseen sellaisessa mallissa, jossa ei olisi ollut näin paljon nurjaa pintaa. Nyt se on kauneimmillaan jalkapohjassa, mikä on sääli. Toiseksi sukan yksityiskohdat eivät minusta ole ihan kohdallaan. Suuritöinen palmikoitu icord-reuna ei esimeksiksi pääse näin monimutkaisen varren kanssa ihan oikeuksiinsa.

My vacation knitting in Italy was supposed to be Austrian socks, but I guess I hadn't taken my knitting mojo with me. I started them somewhat involuntarily on the flight back. Since then, I've been thrilled twisting these tiny cables. I do have some complaints, however. The greatest one is that I should have chosen a different project for this lovely yarn since it's not as pretty purled as it is knitted. I can tell by looking at the bottom of the foot. The other one is that I don't really like the detailing on the sock. For example, the cabled icord edging. it takes up quite a lot of time but it doesn't really show on a sock that has a stitch pattern this complicated.



Minusta on mukavampi neuloa palmikoita suomeksi kuin englanniksi. Itse asiassa koin aivan jonkin aikaa vuosia sitten jonkinlaista palmikkokammoa, kun olin kuullut, miksi sitä englanniksi kutsutaan. Kaapeli muka! En erityisesti innostu ajatuksesta, että koristelisin vaatteitani kaapeleilla. Helmineuleen kohdalla on vähän sama juttu: "sammalneule" ei kuulosta läheskään yhtä hienostuneelta.

When knitting cables, I translate them into Finnish. In Finnish we call them braids and I'd much more like to decorate my clothes with braids than cables. It's the same with moss stitch - the Finnish term, pearl stitch, sound more elegant to me.

Täytyy kai myöntää, että en oikein osaa jakaa näitä eteenpäin. Syy ei ole se, ettenkö osaisi mainita tämänhetkisiä suosikkejani blogien joukosta, mutta en vaan halua. En ole oikein koskaan ollut hyvä tekemään sellaisia listoja. Olen silti oikein, oikein iloinen näistä muistamisista! Kiitos!

Thank you, Kirsi and Lellu, for remembering me when giving out honors. I guess I must admit that I'm not really good in forwarding them, though. I could, of course, name my favourites, but I relly don't want to. I've never been up to that kind of things in fear of hurting someone. But I am really, really glad I got these!

Things to Miss in Tampere, part I

Arboretum.





Jos käyt tai asut Tampereella, paikka on nähtävä! Ei pelkästään näiden ruusujen mutta myös muiden kukkien, erikoisten puiden ja kauniiden puro- ja järvimaisemien vuoksi. Mahtavia maisemia olisi vaikka kuinka paljon kuvattavaksi, mutta sen yhden kerran, kun minulla oli kamera mukana, patteri loppui kesken kaiken. Mutta ruusuista ehdin saada kuvia.



If you visit or live in Tampere, the Arboretum is a must. Not only because of the rose garden, but also because of other flowers, exotic trees and beautiful views to the lake. There is so much to photograph, but I seem to miss having my camera with me when I'm there. This time the battery died before I could get to it all. But I got roses, and they are the most important!

Italia!

No niin! Mielestäni olin aika nopea hankkimaan uuden piuhan kameraan. Tuollaiset asiat tuppaavat minulta aina jäämään. Matkasta on jo vähän aikaa, joten nyt näitä kuvia vasta onkin ihanaa katsella. (Ainoa, mikä harmittaa, on se, että kamera tuntuu ottavan vain harmaansävyisiä kuvia. Onkohan sen värintoistoteho vähentynyt iän myötä vai näyttääkö vain siltä, kun muut kamerat ovat ajaneet ohi?)

I think I did quite a good job in getting a new wire for my camera this soon(ish). I find these things usually quite hard. I've been back from our trip to Italy for quite a while, but that makes it even more fun to look at the pictures. (I do, however, regret the gray color scale. I'm thinking the camera may be so old that the color balance doesn't work anymore, or, more probably, I'm just comparing the pictures with those taken by newer and better cameras.)

Eräs ystäväni on käymässä läpi rankkaa elämänvaihetta. Kun kuulin tästä, halusin tehdä jotain, mutta en oikein tiennyt, miten saattaisin auttaa. Neuloin villasukat. Ne kai auttavat aina? Tämä on ihana malli, ja olin oikein onnellinen saadessani ojentaa sukat hänelle.

I friend of mine is going through some rough times. I felt I wanted to help, but I didn't know how. I knit socks for her. At least she won't have cold feet, and that's something, I guess. The pattern is really nice and i felt good about giving the socks to her.

Immaterialising

Täällä olen, vaikkei siltä vaikuta. Olen hyvissä voimissa ja kovasti innnokas kirjoittelemaan, mutta olen viime aikoina taas kunnostautunut ydinosaamisalueellani eli tärkeiden tavaroiden hukkaamisessa. Tällä kertaa hukkauksen kohteena oli se johto, joka yhdistää tietokoneen ja kameran. Se on kai jossain Italiassa.

I'm still here, though there's little evidence on it. I'm feeling good and dying to write, but my other hobby stands in the way. That other hobby being loosing articles of certain importance. This time, I've immaterialised the wire that would connect my camera to my computer.
It is somewhere in Italy, I guess.

Take Us Home!

Tämä on medän vaatimaton kiitoksemme kahdelle ihmiselle, jotka auttoivat meitä häissämme. Ja se tulee näin kamalan myöhään, anteeksi! Minusta pupu on papille ja pöllö bestmanille, mutta koska nämä henkilöt asuvat saman katon alla, voi yhteishuoltajuuskin tulla kyseeseen. Kiitos vielä kerran! These fellows are our way of saying thank you to two people who helped us with our wedding. I'm sorry I'm so late with them. They live together, so it's really up to them to decide which one is who's, but I always imagined that the owl belongs to the best man and the bunny to the priest. Or maybe they want shared custody of them both!

Pöllö on kyllä tosi mainio, mutta pupun kanssa olisi voinut mennä vähän paremminkin. Ohjeessa oli outoja yksityiskohtia, kuten kasvojen ja käsien virkkaus ensin ketjusilmukoista ja sitten kiinnittäminen paikalleen ommellen. Yritin kyllä virkata suoraan pupuun, mutta en saanut siitä siistiä, joten annoin sitten periksi ja ompelin. Mutta se kyllä tuntui edelleen järjenvastaiselta. Toinen pupussa hämmästyttänyt asia oli sen valtava koko. Mutta se oli kyllä ihan positiivinen yllätys!

I like the owl, but I had some rough times with the bunny. I thought it was a bit strange to crochet chain stitches and attach the to the face (or more correctly as the face) by sewing. Well, I didn't go for that first but tried crocheting the face directly, but the result was not near to neat so I gave up and sewed them. The other suprise was the enormous size of the bunny. But I'd call that a posititive surprise.







Pöllöön en tehnyt huovasta koristeita, koska minulla ei ollut huopaa eikä halua lähteä sitä hakemaan. Siihen, tai oikeastaan tuohon pussiin, onnistuin sitten virkkaamaan huhuu-tekstin suoraan kiintein silmukoin.

The owl had some fleece parts in the pattern, but I didn't have any. So I tried crocheting decorations for the second time, and this time it worked! In Finnish, owls say "huhuu" and that's what it says in the bag.

Nämä olisi voinut huovuttaa, koska pinta on vähän liian harvaa. Jätän päätöksen siitä ja mahdollisen homman vastaanottajille.

I think they might need a bit of felting, as the stuffing shows through in some parts. But I'll let it for the new family members to decide.
