No Point Checking Gauge

The multi-coloured ribbing doesn't seem to prevent rolling that well!

It's pointless to check gauge for a small job like a mitten, isn't it? You may as well knit it untill you can check if it fits.

You can use other's experience in resizing a women's mitten into a man's by adding four stitches to the pattern. It'll make a nice belated birthday present that matches the birthday boy's christmas present.

And later on when you've knit the first mitten about four inches, and you realize it's too small anyway, you can decide that they could be the answer to you own lack of warm mittens. Theys seem to fit your hands perfectly.

Until the first one is finished and you try it on. It is still too small. You rip it and knit some more lenght to it. Now it fits.

But you start to wonder if you should have just ripped it the first time it was too small for him and put four more stiches to it then. After all, you yourself didn't even want those mittens - you don't like to see your fists swearing. And the colour matches absolutely nothing in your wardrobe. And plus you think it's dum you and him have the same colour and same design in your mittens. They will always mix up. And he still needs his to match the hat.

So, is it too late to rip the one above?

kevätkankaat

Kävin kangaskaupassakin yhtenä päivänä. Olo taisi olla hieman mustavalkoinen. Piristysruiskeena ukkosensinistä!

I bought some fabric the other day. I guess the world seemed like a black-and-white place then. But there is some dark blue, too.

Life Is Good

kevät

Ihanaa! Eräs tärkeä välivaihe remontistamme on lähestulkoon saavutettu, ja meillä on tilaa elettäväksi. Ja eräs ihanainen täytti tasavuosia. Ja on kevät. Nyt pitää juhlia!

We've reached an important point at our renovating project and gained much more space to live in. And somebody dear to me reached a nice number of years. And it's spring. We need to celebrate!

As for knitting, I haven't progressed that much. I finished one of the humble socks and started, bizzarry enough, to knit Pirate mittens.

Humble Thank You Socks

madder ribbed sock

I want to thank somebody for his generosity. What better way than to knit a pair of socks? So I finally got a chance to try some of the basic patterns in Knitting Vintage Socks. In general, Finnish men would hardly want anything too fancy in their socks. I hope the receiver isn't too manly for the off-white yarn.

It is a bit boring to knit these, I admit, but on the other hand, I feel like I've now understood something thorough about socks. They don't have to be any more complex than this to be beautiful.

madder ribbed sock

The seam stitch is a strange thing - I don't really know what the purpose of it is or if it even looks that nice on the sock, but I get such kicks out of it anyway. In this sock, the seam stich is knit in garter stich on the heel. It looks lovely and I'm going to continue with it up to the toe. Though you don't see it, it can't harm it's there, can it?

A Pair of Winners

vihreä sukka

Child's Sock in Miranda Pattern
Malli: Nancy Bush: Knitting Vintage Socks
Lanka: Portugalilainen 100 % villa (valmistus lopetettu)
Puikot: 2 mm

Nämä sukat tuntuivat todella tykkäävän poseerauksesta!

Yarn: Portuguese 100 % wool (discontinued)
Needles: 2 mm

These socks couldn't get enough of posing for the camera!

The pattern is super easy and beautiful. I accidentally left one row unknit on one of the socks, but it didin't really show, so I let it be. Normally I might have ripped and fixed it, but this time my sock had too much to loose. She was participating in the Log Cabin Sock Competition, where only time counted, not the style. She had to face a very stubborn traditional Finnish male sock. And look at the winner's grin!

vihreä sukka

Tein varresta kaksi kuviokertaa pidemmän kuin ohjeessa. Tein lisäyksen vasta nilkan kavennusten jälkeen, sillä nilkan suora osa oli ohjeessa omituisen lyhyt (ilmeisesti näin on myös joissain kirjan muissa malleissa). Langasta olisi riittänyt vähän pidempäänkin sukkaan, mutta en uskaltanut yrittää enempää. Kavennuksia tein myös muutaman ohjetta enemmän. Kärkiosaan jouduin jopa lisäämään kerroksia, vaikka ohje on yhdysvaltalaiselle koolle 9-10 ja minä taas käytän sikäläisten kenkien numeroa 6. Tiheys taisi siis olla vähän pielessä!

The decreases on the ankle seemed to be unusually low in the pattern (
I hear it is the case in some other patterns of that book, too), so I added two extra pattern repeats after them. I also did some extra decreases on the ankle. But my gauge must have been quite wrong anyway, since I had to knit some extra rows on the feet - the pattern was for US size 9-10 where I usually am US size 6.

The dust you see on the sock propably came from some other floor than ours, maybe some place I was visiting right before taking this picture...

Lapinkuvat ovat matkakumppaniemme kamerassa. Kyselen myöhemmin, saisinko julkaista niistä muutaman. Tässäpä sen sijaan kummipoikamme potalla!

The Lapland pictures are on our fellow travellers' camera. Later on I might get to show some of them. In the meantime, here are our godson's greetings!

It's Time This Girl Took a Hike

kotikontu

For some time now, I've been forced to work over my limits. I feel a bit blurry now. There hasn't been time to knit, to do housework, not even to watch my favourite programms on TV (could you believe!). The house project has advanced a bit, no thanks to me.

There's so much mess inside my head and inside the house. I'm going to drive away and leave it all behind. I'll be spending this week in Lapland. I'll be companied by the bright green Portuguese yarn and the pattern for Child's Sock in Miranda Pattern by Nancy Bush. Have a very nice week, I know I will!

It Now Even Fits My Enormous Head

shedir_versio_2

Tein ilalla ikävän työn alta pois. Jatkoin Shedirin reunan joustinneuletta näppituntumalla jonkin aikaa.

I did it! I picked up the stitches on the edge and knit some more ribbing to my shedir. It didin't take much time, but the result pleases me well. It changed the whole appearence of my Shedir - it now brings to mind the 1930's or a well-fashioned old lady. Which is always good! And the longer ribbing also gave some structure to the hat. Before, it wouldn't even stay in place well.

shedir

Did you ever wonder if I did a swatch? No, of course not. But last night, while I was knitting, I amused myself with a thought that maybe the swatch would have been right after all. It might just be that my head is enormous.

shedir
Is there a way to picking up stitches so that the seam wouldn't show?

P.S. I feel like I need to add that the pattern for Shedir probably is very good. If I only would have followed it all through the fiorst time, the result might have been nice the first time!

The Arrival of Portuguese Immigrants (and some Shedir)

shedir ja kaulaliina

Shedir ja simppeli kaulaliina

Malli: Knitty (ja hieman omaakin)
Lanka: Wetterhoffin ohuenohut kampalanka kaksinkertaisena (100% villaa). Langasta en ole aivan varma, koska se on ostettu ilman vyötettä alekorista.
Puikot: 3,5 mm sukkapuikot

Shedir and a simple scarf

Pattern: Knitty (and just a hinch of my own adaptations)
Yarn: Wetterhoff's Veera (100% wool). Not completely sure of the yarn, though.
Needles: 3,5 mm dpn

As you may notice on the picture above, the cap is just about an inch too small. I had read that Shedir would easily cover your eyes and nose if you follow the pattern, so I decided to risk it and left one pattern repeat undone. Obviously, I shouldn't have. I'm thinking now if I should pick up the stiches from the edge and continue with the ribbing. Well, of course I should, but will I?

The scarf was a loooong process. It being a simple k1p1 scarf with the sherid cable pattern on both ends, you wouldn't think there should be too many difficulties on the way. Wrong. To give you an example of my abilities, I knit one of the ends facing the wrong way first. :) And there were many more mistakses. But now that the cables are the right way on the scarf, they don't stay still very well. I'm thinking of some sort of a button thingy to keep them in order.

Eilen illalla postiluukussa odotti ihana paketti.

As I came home yesterday, a wonderful package was waiting for me in the mailbox. Sweet Mari had sent me more of the yarn that I love. The yarn production was discontinued and the rest of the colours were on sale. Mari was worried if I'd like the colours, but she shouldn't be! When it comes to socks, I think a little bit of the Eighties does you no harm!

The yarn skeins were tired after a long way. I let them find their own way to whatever place they thought they wanted to sleep in for the first night!

The green yarn didn't spent too much time thinking. She wanted me to spread the blanket my American granny had crocheted for me. The color is actually a bit more smashing in nature!

tummanvihreä

Tummempi vihreä lanka asettui lepäämään arkun päälle.

The darker shade of green settled on an old chest.

violetti

Violetti lanka halusi hassutella isoäidintilkuilla.

The purple yarn felt cheery on the granny squares.

sähäkkä sininen

Sininen mietti kauan, mutta lopulta löysin hänet keittiön tuolilta.

The blue yarn thought about it for a long time and tried lots of places, but finally I found her here, on the kitchen chair.

Musta

Nämä mustat kaverit olivat minulla yllätys! Kiitos tuhannesti, Mari!

These buddies were a surprise for me! Thank you so much, Mari! (Besides these, I'm thinking my favs are the bright green and blue one.)

Tänään kaikki nämä tulokkaat saavat avata neulekirjastoni kirjat ja aloittaa tulevaisuudensuunnitelmansa!

Today, these skeins will open my pattern books and start their career planning...
