Muutokset: Aloitin isommalla silmukkamäärällä ja tein nirkkoreunan varteen. Kaventelin silmukoita mallikuviossa niin, että sitä tuskin huomaa. Tein pidemmät varret. Kavensin aika paljon, ja päädyin sekä alkuperäistä pienempään silmukkalukuun että pienempiin puikkoihin, koska halusin sukat, jotka mahtuisivat pikkukenkiin. Ja ne mahtuivat! Alpakka lämmitti suloisesti vihkitoimituksen ajan, kun olimme ulkona. Sisällä otin ne kyllä pois, koska kengät pääsivät paremmin oikeuksiinsa ilman.



My wedding socks
Pattern: Twinkleberry
Yarn: Teetee Alpakka
Needles: 2,5 and 2,25 mm
Modifications: I started with a larger number of stitches and made a different kind of a cuff. I decreased slowly in the pattern so that you, in my opinion, hardly notice the decreases. I made the leg part a bit longer. I ended up with less stitches than in the pattern and smaller needles because I wanted to have socks that would fit in my fancy shoes. And they fit! Alpaca socks were lovely and warm during the outside ceremony, but I took them off when we went inside. My shoes, after all, looked the best without the socks.

Some found out about the wedding through different channels (look at the gifts we got from Hasbu) and sent me their well-wishes via e-mail. Thank you very much! I'm sure I'll need them one day, though right now, I am almost bursting from all the happy feelings.

Tea Time!

No niin, napit ovat vaihtaneet paikkaa ja istuvuus on heti huomattavasti parempi. Hihatkin lyhenivät juuri sopivasti. Kokonaisuudesta tuli heti vähemmän rouvamainen (En keksinyt parempaakaan termiä. Rouvuus on kyllä ihan hyvä juttu!) ja enemmän itämainen. Tämä päällä tuntuu sopivalta hörppiä vihreää teetä.

The buttons are now where they should be and the fit of the cardi has much improved. Also the sleeves are now shorter! The overall image is more oriental and less... mrs-like (hmm... I couldn't think of a better term, though I am absolutely for marriage and ladies). Wearing it, I got an urge to start drinking green tea.



Oikein huvittaa, kuinka kiire oli saada villatakki valmiiksi - ei ollut aikaa edes ohjetta katsoa. Ihmettelin vain, että kaulus käyttäytyy jotenkin oudosti mielikuviini nähden. Mutta loppu hyvin, kaikki hyvin, koska tykkään tästä oikein paljon.

I'm kind of amused of how much in a hurry I was to finish this - I guess I thought I didn't have time to look at the pattern pictures. I just wondered that my collar turned a bit odd in comparison to my memory images. But all is well that ends well, and so it is here.

Yksi uusi ongelma syntyi tuosta nappilistan siirrosta. Se näkyykin parissa kuvassa. Tällainen systeemihän vaatisi oikeastaan kaksirivisen napituksen, että alempikin lieve pysyisi paikoillaan eikä roikkuisi rumasti. Taidan lisätä etupaneelin alle vielä piilonapin tai -nepparin.

One new problem emerged in the otherwise happy modulation. The left front panel (that stays to the back when the cardi is buttoned up) won't stay in its' place. It will need something extra on the edge. I may sew one extra button or a popper on the reverse side.

Color Theraphy

Joululomalla tuntui sopivalta neuloa vaihteeksi hyväntekeväisyyteen. Sain ison kasan menneiltä vuosilta ylijääneitä lankoja, ja kilkuttelin niistä aivottomasti tilkkuja vaaka-keräystä varten. Ehkä vähän liiankin aivottomasti, sillä kaiki tilkut ovat keskenään aivan eri kokoisia. Mietin tässä juuri, että pitäisiköhän niihin nyt neuloa välikappaleitaja koota vielä kaikki se, mitä on tähän mennessä saatu aikaan.

Christmas time seemed suitable for some charity knittig. I got a huge bag full of leftover yarns from the 80's, so I knitted on some blanket squares with my brain switched off. And you can really tell, because not one of the squares turned out the same size as the others! I'm considering knitting some spare peaces and then unifying them as a small blanket.



Mutta se oli kivaa! Sain tehdä mitä erikoisempia tilkkumalleja ja väriyhdistelmiä. Tein aikamatkan 80-luvulle ja muistin yhtäkkiä, että pienenä persikka oli lempivärini (hui!) ja ruskea oli kuraa. Kuvissa on vain esimerkkejä, sillä tilkkuja syntyi aika hurjasti!

But I had lots of fun! I could experiment with colours and shapes and the feel of the 80's. I remembered, that when growing up, peach was my favorite color (!) and brown was on the list of the least wanted. The pictures only show some examples of the squares.



Lankojen joukossa oli hurjasti samanvahvuista, eriväristä puuvillaa. Niistä virkkasin iteselleni kauan kaivatun penaalin (edellistä ei kehdannut ottaa julkisesti esille) ja Hasbulle pussin, jota voi käyttää meikkien tai jokin muun pikkutilpehöörin sälyttämiseen.



I also got a lot of cotton yarn in same weight but different colors. I chrocheted a pen case fo myself (I was in need - I couldn't show my old one publicly) and a make-up-bag (or whatever) for Hasbu.



Olen muuten alkanut epäillä, että meillä on koita! Jo kahdessa villaisessa pipossa on ollut epäilyttäviä reikiä. Mitään hyönteisiä ei kuitenkaan näy. Pitäisikö tehdä kaiken varalta isku niitä vastaan?

You know, I've started to think that there are moths in the house! I found some suspicious-looking holes on two woolen hats already. But I haven't seen any insects. Hey, all the moth specialists out there - what do you suggest I do?

Christmas Present to Self

Tein yhden joululahjan itsellenikin: Nancyn Gentlemannin iltasukat. Tarvitsin uudet ohuet sukat ja päädyin toteuttamaan tämän mallin oikeastaan uteliaisuudesta: Netistä löytyi hyvin vähän tällä mallilla toteutettuja sukkia. Kirjan kuvastakin on aika vaikeaa saada selvää, koska sukat on toteutettu tummahkolla värillä.

I did make one present for myself: Nancy Bush's Gentleman's socks for evening wear. I was in need of new socks and I ended up knitting these almost purely out of curiosity. The picture on the book doesn't tell a great deal about these, nor did I find very many finished sock of this type online. So I had to give them a try to see what they are like!



En ollut aloittaessa ihan varma, onko malli ihana vai kamala, mutta olen tykännyt kovasti käyttää näitä. Pitsimalli aukeaa hieman jalkaan pantaessa ja nurjat kerrokset tuntuvat kivalta käteen. Ohut pirkkalanka teki ihan kivaa pintaa tiukalla käsisalalla ja 2,25 millin puikoilla. Sukkia muutaman viikon käyttäneenä olen kyllä taas vähän sitä mieltä, ettei pirkkalanka ota kulutusta kovin hyvin vastaan.

When I started, I didn't know whether these were hidious or lovely, but since they were finished, I've really liked to wear them. The lace opens up nicely when worn, and I like how the texture feels on fingertips. I used Ohut pirkkalanka and it worked nicely with size 1 needles, but sadly, it doesn't like a lot of wear. You can already see the socks aren't new.

Muutokset: Aloitin 72 silmukalla, tein pari kahdet kavennukset enemmän ja vielä sen jälkeen pari ylimääräistä mallikertaa, jotta nilkan suorasta osasta tulisi vähän pidempi.

Modifications: I started with 72 stitches, made a couple of extra decreases and added two or three pattern repeats on the ankle.

The Universe Stroke

Kissamme mielestä vietimme aivan liian paljon aikaa netissä, kun olisimme voineet makoilla jouten ja silitellä lemmikkiä. Ovela katti kosti koneelle ja hajotti sen lopullisesti. Ehdimme harjoitella vanhaa kunnon elämää noin kuukauden päivät ennen kuin tänään saapui uusi kone.

Our cat thought we spent way too much time online. That time, she argued, could be much better spent lying on a sofa and petting a sweet animal. So, the clever cat got an idea and "accidently" dropped our laptop on the floor. That was the end of the well-served computer! So, we've been practicing an old-fashioned life until today, when this beautiful new machine came.

Koneen mukana hävisivät tietysti esimerkiksi parin viime vuoden valokuvat ja videoleikkeet, vaikka onneksi joitain harvoja oli poltettu talteen. Enkä viitsi edes ajatella, mitä muuta, koska takaisin niitä ei saa. Siinä samalla menivät joka tapauksessa myös valokuvat niistä muutamista joululahjoista, jotka ehdin saada valmiiksi hyvissä ajoin. Näytän tässä pari viimeistä lahjaa, jotka olivat koneen rikkoutuessa yhä kuvaamatta.

Some things that were lost with the computer I'd rather not think about, since they are gone for good. Among them were pictures of the early-finished Christmas presents, but they weren't many or too skillfully made, so I don't feel bad about that. I'll show some of these gifts I finished after the machine broke.

Terho sai kaulaliinan ja lapaset. Tärkeintä ovat tietenkin tupsut kaulaliinan päissä! Käytin seiskaveikkaa, josta tuli ihan kivan tuntuista, kun annoin sille lanoliinikylvyn. Kaulaliina on neulottu putkeksi, jotta oikea puoli olisi aina päällä.

Terho got new mittens and a matching scarf. The important thing with this one are, of course, the tufts (is that the correct term?) on the scarf ends. The yarn is Novita Seitsemän veljestä, which is not generally worshipped in Finlad, but I think it turned nice after a lanolin bath. The scaft is worked in the round, so that the right side would always be on.



Isä sai t-paidan. Tämä oli eka kerta, kun piirtelin kankaalle, enkä voi jäljellä kehua! Onneksi isä ei ole kovin kranttu pukeutumisensa suhteen...

Dad got a t-shirt. This was my first time using fabric paint, and the time I finished this wasn't excactly my finest hour. But luckily, my dad isn't very peculiar about his clothing.

Kummityttö sai etanapipan ja iloisen kassin, jossa voi vaikkapa säilöä leluja.

Our goddaughter got a snail hat and a happy bag in which to store her toys, for example.

Kiitos kovasti, Lotta, Pilvi, Sherri ja Salla, jotka piristitte päiviäni kunniamaininnoilla. Olen tosi iloinen niistä! Katsotaan, muistaisinko ja ehtisinkö jakaa tätä vielä jonain toisena päivänä eteenpäin. Nyt on tiedossa ihan uutta luksusta: Elokuvailta ihan omassa kodissa.

Than you so much, Lotta, Pilvi, Sherri and Salla,who made my day by giving me this honor. I might pass it on on another day, but now I have to hurry. I've been lacking movie nights at home for a half a year, but that will change NOW.

Happily Ever Since

Ystävämme saivat toisensa 15.1.2005. Häälahjaan piti tulla pieni itsetehty osuus, mutta en ehtinyt viimeistellä sitä häitä varten. Myöhemmin totesin, ettei kyhäelmä sopinut lahjaksi. Ei puhuta siitä sen enempää. Olen tehnyt sijaisrinnakkaislahjoiksi koko perheelle lapaset. (Velka kasvoi vähän korkoa siinä vaiheessa, kun perheeseen syntyi tytär.)

Our friends got married on Jan 15th 2005. We promised to deliver a small supplement to our gift afterwards, since I hadn't had time to finish it. I never did. It was a terrible idea, and those are the last words I'm going to speak of it, ever. But I got over it in a couple of years and made them mittens instead. I had to make a pair for their daughter, too, since I had waited for her to be born before I started.



Tytär on kyllä kasvanut noihin lapasiin jo liian isoksikin. En usko, että ne menevät käteen. Mutta ehkäpä vähän tytöllä vähän isompana olisi nukke, jolle ne olisivat passelit?

The smallest mittens are too small even for a half-year-old baby, I fear. But I wouldn't rip them beause I thought she might have a suitable-handed doll one day.

Paljon onnea onnellisista aviovuosista! Menneistä ja tulevista. Velka on nyt kuitattu.

Congratulations for the happy married years you've shared together! Oh, it feel so light to have this burden off my back.

Olen ihan tosissani miettinyt, miten saisin näistä valloittavan kauniista pavuista helminauhan. Koitimme Terhon kanssa saada niihin reikiä neulalla ja vasaralla. Isoon valkoiseen se syntyikin, mutta homma tuntui tosi työläältä. Keksitkö paremman keinon?

Seriously, I tried to pierce these beans with the help of Terho, a threding needle and a hammer. I'd like to make a necklace. We only succeeded with the large, white one, and it took long enough to have my neclace dreams faint away. Could you suggest a better method?

I baked rye bread today. And it was some very pretty rye bread, I might add.







Terhokin on valmistellut jotain - siideriä. Mutta kannattaakohan sitä juoda? Minä olisin ehklä taipuvainen uskomaan merkkeihin...

Terho has been brewing cider. Do you think it should be drunken? I myself consider trusting the signs...



Putjakkeen kanssa aloitettiin Muir. Oli tarkoitus tehdä kapeampi versio, johon 50 grammaa Wetterhofin Silviaa riittäisi, mutta hetken tuoksinnassa loimme kaikki ohjeen silmukat. Näillä on nyt sitten menty. Eikä kumpikaan meistä osaa muuttua langaksi.

Me and Putjake, we started Muir. We meant to knit a narrower version of the scarf so that the 50 grams of Wetterhof Silvia we have would be enough. But we didn't think about that when we casted on, did we? We've been knitting the whole width of the scarf since. Silly us, why go on?

This Fall's Coldest Day

Kävimme piknikillä Kangasalan kirkkoharjulla. Kivaa oli! Minulla oli päällä uusi ...hmm. Mikä se on, joka on pienempi kuin villatakki, muttei suostu käyttämään nimitystä bolero? Hartianlämmitin? Nuttu-sanan olen varannut päässäni vähän toisentyyppisille vaatteille, hihattimeen ei kieleni taivu.

We had a picnick at a ridge nearby. It was fun. I had my new shrug on.

House Calls

Muistanpas kerran maininneeni, etten oikein välitä kirjahyllystämme. No nyt on otettu useampi askel kohti kirjahyllyrakkautta! Yksi hylly on kasassa, toinen vielä puuttuu. Melkein kaikki kirjat mahtunevat niihin, ja loput saavat ehkä kodin toisaalta talosta.

I once mentioned that I don't particularly like the shelves our books have to sit on. But I do now! One new shelf unit is up and another one is coming up. I'm in hope that most of our books fit there.



Luin vastikään Richard Bachin Lokki Joonatanin ensimmäistä kertaa. Kirja oli omalaatuisuudessaan hyvin piristävä, vaikken osaakaan täysin sulattaa sitä, että kirjassa on kovin selvä ja osoitteleva opetus. Kirjan ulkoasuun hullaannuin täysin! Russel Munsonin lokkikuvat ovat mahtavia.

Recently, I read Jonathan Livingstone Seagull by Richard Bach for the first time. It is an uncommon, detailed story, and I like it for that. What I don't like is when a book has a teaching this obvious. But I absolutely fell in love with the seagull pictures by Russel Munson! They're simply great.



Täällä on muuten harjoitettu kirjoneuletta. Se on ollut minulle aina luonteva ja rakas neulomisen muoto. Kumma kyllä, yhtäkkiä en saa siistiä jälkeä aikaan sitten millään. Hirveätä kiristelyä ja värien pilkahtelua vaan. Mutta en luovuta!

On knitting branch, there has been fair isle. I've always loved doing it and looking at the finished thing, too. But now, all of the sudden, I don't seem to get it look nice. It's too tight and colours are peeking through. Why, oh why? But I won't give up!

Reason to Celebrate

Viime viikonloppuna juhlin vallan ihanissa ja tunnelmallisissa puutarhahäissä . Varasin lämmikkeeksi uuden huivin ja hauskuutukseksi nopeasti kyhätyn kaulakorun.

Last weekend, I got to take part at a lovely wedding party that was held in a chilly garden. For warmth, I took my new scarf with me, and for fun, my new necklace.

Tein huivin tarkoituksella tosi isoilla puikoilla hentoisesta langasta, jotta tulos olisi oikein seittien seitti. Toisaalta puikkokoko auttoi minua pääsemään yli pitsihuivikammostani, jonka sain noin vuosi sitten erityisen pienten puikkojen avustuksella. Mallikertoja on tässä huvissa vain kahdeksan, ja silti koko on ihan kohtuullinen. Lanka on ihanan takertuvaa - huivi pysyy asemassaan kuin sotilas. Kuvat ovat yli- ja alivalottuneita, joten langan värin totuus piilee jossain välillä.

I used needles larger than suggested to get a gossamer scarf. On the other hand, I wanted to get it done quickly to get over my fear of knitting lace scarfs (developed a year ago with a little help of tiny needles). I only needed eight pattern repeats to get a decent-sized scarf. I like it how the scarf kind of grows on your jacket when you put it on - no matter how you move, it'll stay still like a solder. The color is not right on eather of these bad pictures, but somewhere in between.



Avo-anoppi (lyhyemmin avoppi) sai synttärijuhliensa jälkimainingeissa farkkuiset Fetchingit. Todella nätti, mukava ja ah, niin nopea malli. Minulla reunat eivät kuitenkaan osanneet pysyä ihan niin suorina kuin Knittyn kuvissa.

My mother-in-law-to-be (miltb?) got a pair of jeansy Fetchings as a belated birthday present. A lovely, lovely, pattern, and so satisfying in progress. I just wish the edges wouldn't have curled so much as they didn't do so in Knitty's pictures, either.
